As the Golden State Warriors count down to their 2025 Media Day on September 29, the team is making some deep internal transformations. Although the roster is not yet set and official, the front office has made several key promotions and hires, tipping its hand toward a season-opening strategic shift.

A family business
In a surprise move, head coach Steve Kerr has brought aboard his son, Nick Kerr, as an assistant coach on the staff. Nick, who was once the head coach of the Santa Cruz Warriors, the team’s G League affiliate, has enough experience to bring to the NBA team. The father-son coaching combination is part of an exclusive group of family duos in NBA history, following Doc and Spencer Rivers, and Bernie and J.B. Bickerstaff.
Additionally, the Warriors have expanded their coaching staff with some promotions and fresh hires:
- Ben Stelzer: Hired as Head Video Coordinator from his previous position with the Santa Cruz Warriors.
- Shannon Stabler: Promoted to Senior Manager of Player Development.
- Cody Hamane: Upgraded to Performance Coach.
- Mark Tollefsen: Enters as Video Coordinator in Player Development.
These reforms are intended to improve the development plans of the team and incorporate information from their G League affiliate into NBA operations.
Front office promotions
Not only the caoching staff has seen changes, as few thoughtful front office promotions were also made by the Warriors:
- Ryan Atkinson: Promoted to Senior Director of Basketball Operations, for his 13 years of service and increasing contribution to the organization.
All of these signings are reflective of the team’s dedication to enhace its inside core and prepare for the upcoming season’s challenges.
Roster uncertainties
Despite the restructuring of the team, the Warriors still have much doubts over their roster. Only nine players are under contract, and the case of forward Jonathan Kuminga remains unresolved. There has been words that the Warriors and Kuminga have not yet had any negotiations over the extension of the deadline for his $7.9 million qualifying offer, which expires soon.
This uncertainty about Kuminga’s status also contributes to the problems facing the Warriors as they head to Media Day and the season’s opening.
The franchise is walking a narrow rope in terms of internal re-organisation and roster uncertainty. The decisions involving Jonathan Kuminga will establish the tone for the franchise as it navigates through the 2025 season.
