The New York Giants had everything go against them on Monday Night Football. Already facing a hungry Los Angeles Rams team looking for a rebound victory, the Giants saw their franchise quarterback, Jaxson Dart, go down with an ugly-looking knee injury early in the game.
Star wide receiver Malik Nabers then had his shoulder pop out, but was able to return to the game – although in a more ineffective fashion. Nabers and co. need Dart to recover quickly from what was initially deemed an MCL injury. But following an MRI on Tuesday, the Giants didn’t get the news they wanted or needed.
Jaxson Dart could be out for the rest of the season if knee surgery is needed
According to reports, Dart’s knee injury is “worse than anticipated”. That likely means there’s more damage aside from his MCL. With the new diagnosis, there’s a possibility that Dart may have to undergo season-ending knee surgery.
The news is particularly disappointing because both head coach John Harbaugh and general manager Joe Schoen had expressed optimism that the injury wasn’t as bad as it initially looked. As it turns out, it was just as bad, and possibly worse. Giants fans will now have to reset their expectations for the season.
Jameis Winston will step in as New York’s starting quarterback now. This is Winston’s second season with the team. He had a rough go of it against the Rams, completing under 41% of his passes, taking two sacks, and throwing an interception. A full week of first-team reps should help the veteran out for Week 3, at least.
