The New York Mets have suffered a major blow for the rest of the MLB season. On Tuesday, September 9, it was reported that Dominican pitcher Frankie Montas will undergo Tommy John surgery after tearing the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow.
The news is a blow for both the player and the New York organization, which last winter handed him a two-year, $34 million contract in the hope of bolstering its rotation. However, multiple injuries limited the 32-year-old right-hander to just nine appearances in 2025.
Frankie Montas could return to MLB in 2027
In total, Montas pitched 38 2/3 innings before the extent of his physical problem was confirmed. His numbers reflected the difficulties he was going through even before the injury. He finished with a 6.28 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP, plus 32 strikeouts and 14 walks.
The operation will keep him out of action not only for the rest of this season, but also for the entire 2026 campaign, further prolonging his instability in the majors in recent years. He would not return until 2027, as the estimated recovery from Tommy John surgery is 14 to 18 months.
New York Yankees would seek trade with Mets for Pete Alonso
The Yankees will be looking for a first baseman during the offseason, depending on what they want to do with Ben Rice. The ideal situation for the Bronx Bombers would be to allow Paul Goldschmidt to retire or play for another team, keep Cody Bellinger on the roster and make Rice a long-term option at the position.
If the Yankees have other plans, there will be a first baseman available to consider, and that player is none other than Pete Alonso of the New York Mets. All Alonso has done throughout his career is hit home runs at an elite level, something the Yankees love.
