It’s not only her strong performance that has made Sophie Cunningham stand out in Indiana Fever. Her good sense of humor has endeared her to the team’s fans in her first season alongside the Stephanie White-led team.
Ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a torn medial collateral ligament (MCL) in her right knee and subsequent surgery, the 29-year-old point guard misses Playoff games. However, before Fever faces the Atlanta Dream, she unveiled her “new team“.
Sophie surprises fans with her announcement
Cunningham is not the only Indiana player who will be out for the rest of 2025, but they are joined by Sydney Colson, Aari McDonald, Chloe Bibby and Caitlin Clark.
What is certain is that, even without their stars, Fever managed to qualify to Playoffs for the second consecutive time and faces this Sunday 14th their first game.
Despite the fact that she hasn’t been on the court since August 17, Sophie decided to attend the Gateway Center in Atlanta on Sunday to cheer on her teammates. True to her style, as soon as she arrived, she brought a smile to the faces of those in attendance.
In a video shared on the WNBA’s official X account, the Indiana star arrived at the arena wearing a giant brace on her right knee, accompanied by medical staff. Faced with this situation, Sophie joked:
“What’s up guys? This is my new team, the medical staff,” said Cunningham.
This fun atmosphere between the fans and the team will be key to continue supporting Fever as they fight to keep their place in the playoffs.
The truth is that, despite the jokes, the team misses the point guard’s presence on the court. Her 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 1.0 steals and 1.7 three-pointers in 30 appearances and her bold and competitive spirit will be needed.
However, to the good fortune of her teammates, she will be there to cheer them on and bring smiles to their faces as well as to the fans as she has been doing. But will Sophie add her four other injured teammates to this new team?
