Canelo Alvarez regained his IBF super middleweight title with a unanimous decision victory over William Scull in a rather boring fight, with the Mexican once again establishing himself as the unified champion of the division.
Although Scull was more active, his lack of precision and defensive strategy was not enough against a calculating and patient Canelo, who effectively punished him to the body and eventually won, but his frustration was evident.
“It was a boring fight. I hate that type of fighter. When a fighter isn’t trying to win, he’s just trying to survive,” Canelo said after the win.
However, he hopes his next opponent, Crawford, doesn’t come in with the same plan.
“That’s why I don’t like fighting guys like that. They can only survive until the 12th round and that’s why I don’t like them. I hope it’s a different kind of fight in September”.
For his part, William Scull also had a few words for ESPN as he headed to his locker room after the fight.
“They beat me in a fight without hitting me. The truth is, it’s a shame. Boxing falls into that because at the end of the day it’s boxing, not getting hit,” the Cuban said.
Worst fight of the May 5 weekend
Canelo vs. Scull broke an unenviable record: it was the 12-round fight with the lowest number of punches since CompuBox began keeping records, with just 445 total punches thrown throughout the fight. Alvarez landed 152 punches to Scull‘s 293.
However, the Guadalajara fighter did not leave completely disappointed, as he took home $80 million for the fight, while his opponent reportedly walked away with $3 million. This is the best purse the Cuban has ever earned, as he won $300,000 against Shishkin.
Fans explode over the fight
“Honestly, the fight had some knockout moments; I’m pretty sure I knocked out several, and I wasn’t the only one, zzzzzz.”
“I don’t know what was worse, Ryan Garcia’s fight or this? Pathetic.”
“If I were Turki Alalshikh, I would take half the paycheck of ‘Canelo’ and William Scull. Last night’s show was despicable…”
“Thank you Inoue for saving May 5th boxing week.”
These were some of the comments posted on social media. Let’s hope that the Canelo-Crawford fight on September 12th in Las Vegas will be much better for the show.
