There’s a lot that goes into being a successful boxing promoter. Along the way, you have to ruffle plenty of feathers. But some promoters seek out conflict more than necessary, and Oscar De La Hoya is certainly one of those.

The “Golden Boy” has had altercations with even his own fighters, like Ryan Garcia, but his most notable squabble was with Canelo Alvarez. The two seem to despise each other, getting in personal shots whenever the opportunity arises. While Canelo has unique disdain for De La Hoya, a rival of Alvarez may actually hate the promoter even more: Edgar Berlanga.

Following an open workout ahead of his bout against Hamzah Sheeraz, Berlanga was asked about his quarrel with De La Hoya. Berlanga didn’t mince words, made his feelings about him truly known and sent him a warning.

F**k Oscar De La Hoya. F**k you. I’ma see you tomorrow. We’re gonna smack the s**t out of you tomorrow.

Berlanga then got in two final statements before moving on to another topic: “F**k Oscar… F**k Oscar.

Why does Edgar Berlanga hate Oscar De La Hoya?

It appears that Berlanga isn’t very fond of De La Hoya. The bitterness stems from a callout on De La Hoya’s part from August of last year. The promoter questioned Berlanga’s hometown identity, saying “I think I’m more Puerto Rican than you are“. De La Hoya had also stated that he didn’t think Berlanga was a worthy opponent for Alvarez.

Berlanga responded strongly in the lead-up to the Alvarez fight, claiming that he would “beat him up when we see him“. Berlanga also felt De La Hoya was trying to undermine his fight against Canelo due to not being able to sign him to the Golden Boy roster. Berlanga ended up signing with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom.
