Against all odds, the Cleveland Browns surprised everyone in the 2025 draft by bolstering their quarterback room with two unexpected picks: Dillon Gabriel in the third round and Shedeur Sanders in the fifth. The move, far from anticipated, left both analysts and fans baffled as it saturated the quarterback position.
This was especially true in the case of Shedeur Sanders, who fell to the 144th pick in the 2025 draft, at which point the Browns ended their long search.
Although they had Joe Flacco as a veteran backup after Deshaun Watson‘s injury, the Browns surprised everyone by strengthening a position that did not seem urgent by selecting two young quarterbacks with great potential.
One name that many forget is Dillon Gabriel, who was selected 50 pick ahead of Sanders, but surely did not take the news that Shedeur would be competing directly with him for a spot with the Browns very well.
The Browns have amassed a veritable crowd at quarterback: five names, five stories, and only one starting job up for grabs. With the arrival of Sanders and Gabriel via the draft, added to Flacco, Pickett, and Watson, doubts remain in Cleveland, but it looks like they will work it out without any problems.
Dillon Gabriel will have to swim against the tide of great players and media hype surrounding Shedeur Sanders
That’s right, you could say Dillon Gabriel comes to the Cleveland Browns as an underdog.
“You know, I love him for who he is. I think we can learn from each other,” Dillon told the club’s media about the direct competition with Sanders.
Still, he sent a strong message that he is ready to compete for the position against anyone.
“I’ve done it at every stage and at every level. So thank God for that and for the excellent preparation. But I also want you to know that my competition is yesterday. How can I be better than yesterday? That’s what I’m focusing on and I’m continuing to create an environment that people want to be a part of and that’s all you can do,” said Gabriel.
Dillon Gabriel will have to fight against many factors to earn an important spot among the Browns‘ quarterbacks, and this mini rookie camp will be his big chance to make a name for himself.
