It’s been well over a year now since Ryan Garcia‘s stunning, dominant “win” over Devin Haney that shocked the boxing world. Since then, the fight was ruled a no contest, Garcia served a one-year suspension and both boxers underwhelmed on the same card in Times Square in May. Haney won that night, while Garcia lost, but fans weren’t thrilled with the former’s performance.
The idea of a rematch hasn’t gone away in the minds of both fighters, but for now, they are moving on. Garcia doesn’t have a set plan yet, but Haney is gearing up to fight in November for a world title. Taking on Brian Norman Jr., Haney needs to get his ascension in the sport back on track with an elite performance. If he pulls it off, he will walk away with the WBO welterweight belt as well. If there was any doubt about Haney’s motivation, he has put it all to rest this week.
Devin Haney and Brian Norman Jr. nearly come to blows on two occasions
On Thursday, there was an altercation between Norman and Haney’s bodyguard after Devin took exception to Norman putting a finger on his chest. That led to Norman claiming Haney and his team are “nervous“, then saying Haney is “still going to sleep”.
On Friday, during an on-stage face-off, Haney unleashed his inner beast. He got up in Norman’s face then pushed the champion for putting his hand on his chest. Before that, Haney was in Norman’s ear with some mind games. Haney laughed in his face and Norman didn’t like it.
Haney has never been shy to talk trash, but he looks more fiery than ever as he gets ready for a crucial fight. His bout against Garcia really seemed to affect him mentally, but there’s no denying the drive is still there.
