A season of reset could quickly turn into opportunity for one NFC contender, as the Detroit Lions may still have a path to land Maxx Crosby – but not until later in the 2026 season.

After a disappointing 2025 campaign, Detroit is looking for ways to reassert itself as a Super Bowl threat. One of the biggest potential moves involves Crosby, the Las Vegas Raiders star who has been at the center of trade speculation for months.

While earlier rumors linked Crosby to multiple teams – including a failed deal involving the Baltimore Ravens – the situation has cooled for now. Crosby remains with the Raiders and is expected to begin the season in Las Vegas.

However, that may not be the end of the story.

Why a Maxx Crosby trade could resurface midseason

According to NFL insider Albert Breer, the Raiders are taking a temporary step back from trade discussions involving Crosby.

The reasoning is strategic. After tension surrounding his late-season shutdown due to a knee injury, the organization is focused on rebuilding trust – both with the player and its fan base. Allowing Crosby to return, perform well, and reestablish his value could make any future move smoother.

“If he’s going to be traded, it’ll likely come after he gets back on the field and plays really well,” Breer explained.

That timeline points toward a potential trade window closer to the 2026 deadline. If the Raiders struggle early in the season while Crosby excels individually, the team could revisit trade talks under more favorable conditions.

For the Lions, patience could pay off.

Detroit has been searching for a high-impact pass rusher to pair with Aidan Hutchinson, and Crosby would represent a major upgrade. The team has already shown a willingness to make aggressive midseason moves, including adding Za’Darius Smith in 2024 after injuries disrupted their defense.

Crosby, however, would be a far more transformative addition.

If Detroit remains in playoff contention by midseason, acquiring a player of his caliber could significantly elevate their defensive ceiling and overall Super Bowl chances. Any potential deal would come with challenges.

Crosby‘s health will be a key factor after the knee issue that contributed to the collapse of previous trade talks. Teams will want clear evidence that he has returned to peak form before committing significant assets.

Additionally, the cost of acquiring a player of his stature – likely involving premium draft picks – could make negotiations complex.

From the Raiders’ perspective, keeping Crosby also has value. He remains a cornerstone player who can help establish a culture during a rebuilding phase, even if a long-term fit is uncertain.

The early part of the 2026 season will likely determine everything.

If the Raiders stay competitive, Crosby could remain in Las Vegas for the long term. But if the team struggles and he performs at a high level, trade talks could quickly reignite.

For the Lions, the strategy is clear: stay in contention and be ready.
