The season has begun, and the Cleveland Browns fell in painful fashion against Cincinnati. The main culprit in the defeat was Andre Szmyt, who first missed an extra point and later failed on a 36-yard field goal attempt that crushed the Browns’ hopes of securing their first win of the season.
Joe Flacco, who earned the starting role during the preseason, performed well despite throwing two interceptions that weren’t his fault. The 18-year NFL veteran finished with 290 passing yards and a touchdown. On defense, Myles Garrett shined with two quarterback sacks.
Even so, the situation is complicated for the Cleveland Browns, who are favorites to end up with the first overall pick in the Draft. Kevin Stefanski’s team faces a brutal schedule ahead: Baltimore Ravens, Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Shedeur Sanders must evaluate his place with the Cleveland Browns
There’s no doubt Shedeur Sanders is the most polarizing player on the Browns-and perhaps in the entire NFL-largely because of his background and who his father is. However, in the league he’s just a rookie trying to carve out a role after sliding in the last Draft.
In the preseason, Sanders performed well enough. Remember, he was a fifth-round pick who fought his way onto the team’s final roster. The problem is that he sits as the third-string quarterback, behind Joe Flacco and rookie Dillon Gabriel, who serves as the backup.
Analyst Tony Grossi questioned the Browns’ handling of Sanders’ development, asking: “Is he being developed by the Cleveland Browns?” on ESPN.
Heading into 2025, unless Joe Flacco or Dillon Gabriel suffers a collapse or injury, it will be very difficult for Shedeur Sanders to get an opportunity. He may need to look elsewhere to find his shot.
