Boston Red Sox star Alex Bregman has established himself as one of the best third basemen in MLB since he entered the league in 2016. While he has been out of action for the past six weeks or so with a quadriceps strain, the fact that he was hitting .299 with an OPS of .839 before that point shows that Bregman is still in his prime. However, Alex’s signing was one of the most talked about in the preseason where the Red Sox signed him for $120 million for three years.

Another team that was in the media spotlight during the offseason was the New York Mets with their flashy signings. However, their investment does not represent what they have done on the field. The Mets’ third basemen have been disappointing up to this point in the 2025 season. So if the Mets’ front office wants to make a splash at the trade deadline, bringing in a player like Bregman would be a big boost.

What would be the ideal trade between the Red Sox and Mets?

It should be remembered that the trade deadline is July 31. Against this backdrop, Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report mentioned the New York Mets as one of Bregman’s main potential suitors, and also included a hypothetical trade proposal that the Mets could use to secure him. “Trade proposal: The New York Mets get 3B Alex Bregman; the Boston Red Sox get designated hitter Starling Marte and right-handed pitcher Nolan McLean (No. 3 for the Mets),” Rymer wrote.

“An exchange for Bregman would be ideal and would obviously turn one of the Mets’ biggest weaknesses into a significant strength. And for this club, more than most, money is not an issue,” he added. With $10.4 million still to be received, Marte would be in this deal in part to balance the finances. But for Boston, the real goal of signing him would be to buy McLean from the Mets.

The cost of Bregman’s contract would make it impossible for him to move to NY

“It’s uncertain if the Mets would make such a deal, but McLean is the kind of player the Red Sox should want if they’re going to get rid of Bregman. His slider alone is worth it, and he’s used it to compile a 2.25 ERA in the minors this season,” Rymer concluded. While it’s unclear if the Red Sox would want a veteran who is already past his prime like Marte (especially in exchange for Bregman), getting a player like McLean, who is arguably the Mets’ most prominent prospect right now, makes this possible trade proposal realistic.

Both teams are in dire need of wins. While the Boston Red Sox are stuck in the American League East in fourth place and seeing how difficult it has been for them to move up the standings where the New York Yankees are in the lead while the Toronto Blue Jays and Tampa Bay Rays complicate the situation. Meanwhile, the New York Mets are in a more stable situation where they occupy second place in the National League East, just a game and a half behind the Philadelphia Phillies.
