A week later, the biggest story in the NFL world remains Dianna Russini‘s alleged affair with Mike Vrabel. A journalist engaging in any type of off-field relationship with a coach is risky for many reasons, especially when both are married. While nothing has been fully confirmed yet, the pictures seem to tell at least a large portion of the story.
Russini has already resigned from The Athletic. In her statement, fans noted that she didn’t outright reject any claims about a potential relationship with Vrabel. For some, that’s an admission of guilt. Regardless, Russini has had her professional career completely dismantled as a result of this. Meanwhile, Vrabel has so far come out unscathed.
Colin Cowherd says Mike Vrabel is dealing with a moral issue, while Dianna Russini’s is ethical
The biggest reason that Vrabel hasn’t really been affected by this scandal on a professional level is that it’s more of a moral issue for him than an ethical one. Colin Cowherd recently pointed out this distinction, making it clear that Russini is being affected because there’s a code of ethics journalists must adhere to in their professional careers. Head coaches don’t necessarily have to be transparent in how they operate, and they aren’t the ones reporting on information for the masses.
It may not be fair, but there simply isn’t a question of coaching integrity that Vrabel has to deal with like Russini does in a journalistic sense. Despite that, there have been doubts raised about Vrabel’s future following this messy situation. Local Boston reporters have said that the head coach needs to at least address his players and explain the situation. Albert Breer was quoted as saying that Vrabel’s credibility has taken a hit.
Despite that, it’s important to note that Patriots owner Robert Kraft had his own off-field scandal and could very well just turn a blind eye to all of this. That’s especially likely following a season where Vrabel led the Patriots to a Super Bowl appearance.
Vrabel has his dream job, and nothing seems likely to change that. His marriage might be in danger, but it’s extremely unlikely he would leave his position unless there’s overwhelming pressure to do so. That doesn’t exist as of this moment.
