The Kansas City Chiefs have played at Arrowhead Stadium since 1972; however, it appears that the time of that venue has reached its end. The facility is located in Kansas City, Missouri, and the new stadium would be built in Kansas City, Kansas, marking a significant shift for the franchise after decades in the same home.
The Chiefs currently have a lease agreement with Arrowhead Stadium through January 2031, which means that by that same year they could potentially debut the new facilities for that season, provided that timelines and plans move forward as expected.
By those dates, the new stadium is expected to be completed, and it will also be designed to host all kinds of events throughout the year. Since the plan includes a domed structure, it could also function as a possible future home for a Super Bowl.
The reasons why the Kansas City Chiefs are moving
Clark Hunt would like to remain in the current venue, but Arrowhead has become outdated. In addition, the new stadium would include a dome, allowing fans to be far more comfortable and protected from the harsh weather conditions that are common in the area during the fall and winter months.
The lack of financing has pushed the franchise to consider moving, even to another city. With the new stadium concept, the Chiefs expect to generate better returns for the organization and to be viewed as a strong candidate to host a Super Bowl in the future.
Will the KC Royals also leave?
Kansas City’s baseball team, which shares parking facilities with Arrowhead Stadium, has a contract at Kauffman Stadium through 2030 and, according to sources, has no plans to renew it.
Financing problems have also affected that franchise. Although a funding scheme based on taxes was proposed, it was ultimately rejected, leaving the future of the Royals’ stadium situation uncertain.
Moving from Kansas City, Missouri, to Kansas City, Kansas
Being located on the border between the two cities and states would allow the teams to draw fans from both populations, potentially generating higher revenue. The stadium would be built near The Legends, the shopping and entertainment district in Kansas, which is also home to Kansas Speedway, Hollywood Casino, and Children’s Mercy Park.
There are now 53 years of Chiefs history at Arrowhead Stadium, years that in the near future will exist only in the memories of fans in Kansas City and across the NFL, as the franchise prepares to close a long chapter and begin a new era elsewhere.
