A few weeks ago Emilio Azcárraga spoke about the possibility of a Canelo Álvarez fight at the Estadio Azteca, just as happened with Julio César Chávez in 1993 with nearly 133,000 fans in attendance for his victory over Greg Haugen.
For Mauricio Sulaimán, the president of the World Boxing Council, in Mexico it is a good time for an event of that magnitude to take place, due to the passion there is in Mexico for boxing and sports in general, he spoke in EXCLUSIVE for MARCA MX.
Sulaimán, WBC president: “We will always have champions and quality”
Sulaimán, present at the premiere of the new documentary about Julio César Chávez, which premieres on Vix next Friday, September 11, spoke about the quality of Mexican boxing.
“We have William Zepeda, who has just won a world title, Camarón Zepeda, Divino Espinosa. There is a great amount of talent in national boxing, both men and women, and we will always be one of the countries with the greatest number of champions, but above all quality.”
“The boxing serves a great role in society. Both in Mexico and in all countries, every boxer in a gym is a person off the streets where one finds easy ways out for many things, where one can find a wrong path in life,” said the head of the WBC.
Does Canelo Álvarez to the Azteca Stadium?
A few weeks ago Azcárraga said that “there is an opportunity, for example, I would make a call to Canelo. It would be worth doing one of the fights Canelo has.”
For his part, Saúl Álvarez added that he likes the idea: “it is always an honor to fight in Mexico and in front of my people, even more so in a stadium like the Estadio Azteca, which we all know.”
Sulaimán thinks it is a good time for an event to take place at what is now the Banorte Stadium, but it is not the only historic venue.
“It is necessary, Mexico deserves it, the Mexican fans deserve it. We have, as I was saying, a large number of boxers and above all, being able to have an event, a sellout at the Azteca for Canelo would be wonderful, a carnival of championships at the Plaza de Toros. There have been a great number of highly important fights in our country and I feel that this is the right moment.”
