Mexican boxer Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez usually gives his opinions without a filter and during his stay in Saudi Arabia he was asked about his choice of the best boxer of all time and did not hesitate to give his point of view.
Canelo is in Riyadh to complete his preparations for his upcoming fight against Cuban William Scull on May 3 and arrived many days in advance to adapt to the schedule, as his fight will be on the morning of Sunday, May 4 in Saudi Arabia.
So alongside his training, in his first few days in the Arab country, he gave an interview to DAZN Boxing, where among other things he was asked about the GOAT of boxing (the greatest of all time) and ignored Mike Tyson completely to choose a fighter who is often an answer from many experts and fans.
“The greatest of all time is Muhammad Ali,” said Canelo Alvarez, while after calling himself the current face of boxing, when asked who could be his successor, he did not venture to give a name, but his desire about nationality: “It’s very difficult to say because there are many good boxers, but I hope it will be a Mexican.”
Mike Tyson’s respect for Muhammad Ali
At the end of February 2025, Mike Tyson acknowledged in an interview with ThisIs50 that Muhammad Ali would have beaten him if they had met in the ring, as “there is no one like him”, he even compared him to the ferocity of a Tyrannosaurus Rex, but qualified that only with a face that had nothing to do with how he was when he got into the ring.
“There’s nobody like him, nobody. Everything we have, he replaced us,” Tyson said of Ali to ThisIs50, adding: “He’s an animal, he looks more like a model than a boxer. He’s like a Tyrannosaurus Rex with a beautiful face, he’s mean and vicious, he’ll take you into deep water and drown you. He’s very special, the best. Nobody can beat Ali, I can’t beat that guy, no way. Impossible.”
Both fighters are among the best in their sport, although Ali has memorable victories against several boxing legends: Joe Frazier, George Foreman and Sonny Liston.
