The “Waterbury Open” comment is a reference to the cult classic movie Happy Gilmore, a fictional golf tournament that symbolizes amateur, nostalgic fun. McCaffery’s joke resonated as some felt like with the performance the three put in the event, they might as well consider swapping sports and try the open courses.
Clark’s day at the Pro-Am was already iconic: she was surprised with a $22,000 check from Gainbridge, the company she represents as a brand ambassador. She announced that the money would be directly sent to her Caitlin Clark Foundation, which works to support youth education, nutrition, and sports in the area of Iowa.
McCaffery’s Waterbury Open joke was also an internal joke as that is what Sophie yelled before taking her shot at the Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Florida in another golfing situation. It seems golf is the sport to go to if they want to try new things.
