It’s not often that Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese agree on something-unless it’s Lexie Hull’s happiness. The WNBA’s most talked-about rivals joined forces this week, not on the court, but in the comment section of their former teammate’s engagement post.
Hull, who now plays alongside Clark for the Indiana Fever and was teammates with Reese on the Rose BC team in the Unrivaled league earlier this year, just announced her engagement to longtime boyfriend and former pro baseball player Will Matthiessen-and the women’s basketball world couldn’t be happier for her.
Hull dropped the news on Instagram with a dreamy series of engagement photos and the caption: “engaged to my best friend cheers to forever!” Within minutes, two of the WNBA’s biggest names jumped in to celebrate.
Clark and Reese united at last
Clark exploded with excitement, commenting: “YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYY SO HAPPY” while Reese chimed in just as sweetly: “GO BIG LEXIEEEEEE SO HAPPY FOR YOU.”
It was a rare, feel-good crossover moment for two players often framed as on-court opposites. And they weren’t alone-Kate Martin added a cheerful “Congrats!!!”, and Mystics rookie and former Stanford teammate Kiki Iriafen posted: “Ahhhh!!! So happy for you smexy Lexie!!”
The 24-year-old Hull has been a steady presence in women’s hoops since her Stanford days, and this moment was nothing short of a full-circle celebration.
Who is Will Matthiessen?
Matthiessen, 27, also played at Stanford before a minor-league baseball career that saw him rise to Double-A with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. He’s now based in Indianapolis, working in finance, while Hull gears up for another WNBA season.
With both Clark and Reese showing love, it’s clear Hull has earned serious respect-and major hearts-in the women’s basketball world. Whether they’re teammates or rivals, sometimes love off the court brings everyone together.
