Every year, the NFL adopts certain changes that can be either minor or major, but play a role in how each franchise operates. The Cleveland Browns, with polarizing owner Jimmy Haslam, wanted to shake things up this offseason with a shocking rule change proposal.
The Browns submitted a proposal to change the way trading of future draft picks would work. They wanted to extend it to five years into the future, instead of the current three-year limit. Many took it as the Browns angling to set up massive trade proposals for Myles Garrett, their legendary pass-rusher who has been the subject of trade rumors following his contract restructuring.
Cleveland Browns pull draft pick proposal after Sean McVay joked about it
On Monday, the Browns withdrew the proposal before it could even get to a vote this week at the annual league meeting in Phoenix, Arizona. That came very shortly after Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay scoffed at the idea of the rule change being seriously considered. McVay had appeared on Kay Adams’ TV show and practically laughed at the rule change proposal.
“There’s 0% chance that gets through. I respect the courage of [Cleveland Browns GM Andrew Berry] to be able to have a very sound reasoning of what’s behind it. If there’s one thing you can bet Vegas odds on, there’s no chance that thing’s getting through. I’m not backing that.“
It’s somewhat surprising McVay is so against it, given that the Rams have been one of the most willing teams to trade future draft picks. But McVay made note that he’s on the league’s Competition Committee, which exsists to ensure fair play in the NFL.
If the Browns’ rule would have passed, it would have created utter chaos in the trade market. Tanking would ramp up to an all-time high, and it would be a bad look for the league all around.
