Brooks Koepka isn’t used to watching the weekend from the sidelines at the PGA Championship.
But after a disappointing showing at Valhalla Golf Club, where he shot 9-over par and failed to make the cut, the five-time major champion became the center of attention for a different reason-a tense encounter with a heckler.
As Koepka was leaving the course on Friday, visibly frustrated by his performance, a fan shouted a jab from the gallery: “Guaranteed money does that, Brooks.”
The dig was aimed squarely at his decision to join LIV Golf, where he signed a lucrative multi-year contract reportedly worth over $100 million. Koepka didn’t let the remark slide. He paused, looked toward the crowd, and called out, “You want to come down here and say it?”
The fan remained behind the gallery rope, and the incident didn’t escalate further. But the brief exchange, captured on video and shared widely across social media, quickly drew attention and sparked fresh debate around Koepka‘s LIV Golf affiliation and his recent form.
Koepka’s uncharacteristic major struggles draw scrutiny
Koepka has built his career on his dominance in golf’s biggest events, with three PGA Championships and two U.S. Open titles to his name.
Last year, he won the PGA Championship at Oak Hill, his first major since 2019. But his 2024 season has looked very different.
The 34-year-old also missed the cut at the Masters in April, and his performance at Valhalla marked the first time he failed to reach the weekend at a PGA Championship.
For a player who once seemed nearly untouchable in major tournaments, it’s a notable downturn.
Though he’s continued to shine in LIV events-winning the LIV Golf Jeddah event in March-questions about his consistency on golf’s biggest stages are growing louder.
His missed cuts this year have fueled concerns about whether the less frequent, lower-pressure environment in LIV Golf may be affecting his ability to compete at the majors.
Speculation continues about Koepka’s future in LIV Golf
Koepka‘s current situation is also entangled in speculation about his long-term plans. In March, Fred Couples said he “talks to [Koepka] all the time,” and suggested that Koepka might be looking for a way back to the PGA Tour.
That prompted Phil Mickelson to publicly criticize Couples, calling his comments a “low class jerk move.”
Koepka didn’t offer a firm answer when asked about his future. “I’ve got a contract obligation out here to fulfill, and then we’ll see what happens,” he said. His reported contract with LIV runs through 2026.
In the meantime, Koepka remains a central figure in the sport-both for his golfing pedigree and for moments like Friday’s confrontation, which reminded everyone that he doesn’t shy away from conflict, on or off the course.
