If you’re an above-average quarterback in the NFL, you’re bound to get paid tons of money. That’s the nature of the league in today’s day and age, as evidenced by Brock Purdy‘s massive contract. The San Francisco 49ers QB’s contract details surfaced on Friday, and he’s set to make $53 million per year, which makes him the seventh-highest paid quarterback in the league.
Surprisingly, it puts him behind Trevor Lawrence and Tua Tagovailoa, and way behind Dak Prescott. Prescott is the highest-earning quarterback per year, at $60 million per season. For many Dallas Cowboys fans, he’s overpaid. While that may be true, the going rate for quarterbacks is constantly changing. In one or two years, Prescott will be surpassed by others, but there’s no denying Prescott has absolutely maximized his earning potential, at the expense of Jerry Jones.

Purdy’s contract has brought Prescott’s contract(s) to the forefront once again. In the minds of the business savvy, Prescott has done an incredible job making money by leveraging shorter deals.
By not committing to an extremely long deal, such as Patrick Mahomes for instance, Prescott has been able to cash in a couple of times once the quarterback market has been reset. And due to Jones’ patience and unwillingness to quickly get contract negotiations done, Prescott has been able to take advantage.
Given that quarterbacks have all the leverage in today’s NFL, Prescott can once again try to negotiate a better contract in a year or two, as long as he continues to perform productively on the football field.
