The ongoing saga surrounding Brock Purdy’s contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers isn’t over. According to the latest reports from team insiders, negotiations between the front office and the quarterback have stalled completely and are showing no signs of progress.
Brock Purdy – and especially his agent – are aiming for a deal worth $50 million or more per season. This has sparked debate about whether the 49ers’ quarterback is truly worth that kind of money.
Brock Purdy is not seen as a Top 10 quarterback in the league
After a 2023 season in which the 49ers reached the Super Bowl but lost in overtime to the Kansas City Chiefs, expectations were high for San Francisco to remain a top contender in the NFC. However, that wasn’t the case – not only did they miss the playoffs in 2024, they finished last in the NFC West.
NFL analyst Chris Simms made a strong statement about the situation on Pro Football Talk Live, saying that Purdy isn’t viewed as a Top 10 quarterback in the league and that the franchise should think twice before making him one of the highest-paid players at his position.
“In the league, nobody looks at Brock Purdy as a top-10 quarterback in football. Nobody. Yeah, with Shanahan as his OC and the 49ers’ all-star team around him the last few years, he can look pretty good. He can look top 10-ish. But we just saw last year when the 49ers’ all-star team got injured, they went 6-11 – and we’re talking about paying him over $50 million a year?”
Doubts continue to swirl around Brock Purdy. If the front office were truly convinced he’s worth that kind of money, they probably would’ve signed him by now. Even Puka Nacua, star wide receiver for the Los Angeles Rams, recently said the 49ers would be making a serious mistake by paying Purdy $50 million or more per season.
