The New York Mets are assembling a formidable roster this offseason, one they hope will pay dividends when the 2026 campaign arrives, a date that is drawing ever closer. Some key pieces departed, but new arrivals promise to restore the franchise’s former prestige.
Pete Alonso and Edwin Díaz left New York to join other teams, and it initially appeared the Mets would suffer from their departures. However, the front office quickly moved to fill those gaps and reshape the roster.
Not long ago, former Toronto Blue Jays infielder Bo Bichette joined the club, and with him, the organization is making a move reminiscent of what happened with Alex Rodriguez in 2004, a shift that helped reposition him as a star player.

It was recently revealed that the shortstop would be moved from his primary role in the infield. Instead of playing at shortstop, he would take over duties at third base.
This decision did not go unnoticed by the press in the city that never sleeps. New York Post journalist Joel Sherman compared the situation to what once unfolded with the Yankees involving Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter.
In his case, Jeter played shortstop, it was understood. He was a four-time champion… he wasn’t going to move Alex Rodriguez.”…”The same is true here with Francisco Lindor, who’s kind of on a Hall of Fame arc as well. Maybe not quite as obvious as Jeter’s was… and Bichette said ‘yeah, it’s easier to do it if you know you’re doing it for a star.
Said Sherman, per New York Post Sports on X. He also recalled what Bichette himself had said about the matter.
He said (Bichette) ‘all the ego went out the window when I played second base in the World Series.
It is worth remembering that Bichette and the Blue Jays came very close to capturing the championship in the 2025 season against the Los Angeles Dodgers. However, the sensational Japanese stars of the West Coast club proved unstoppable.
As for Lindor, questions remain with the start of the 2026 season approaching. After the hand surgery he underwent, it is still uncertain whether he will be ready for Opening Day.
With this move announced by the New York franchise, Bo Bichette appears calm and willing to do what is necessary to help the team remain competitive and push for a return to the World Series.
