The recent Subway Series between the New York Yankees and the New York Mets not only left emotions on the field, but also a tense incident in the stands that has put the spotlight on the difficult season of Yankees player Anthony Volpe. A video circulating on social media revealed a verbal confrontation between Volpe’s father, Michael, and a Mets fan, apparently motivated by criticism of the young player.

The incident was caught on video and shared by the account “Talkin’ Yanks” on X. In it, a Mets fan, located a few rows away, is seen berating Anthony Volpe’s father, Michael. Michael’s response was not long in coming, replying in an equally angry tone. The post summed up the scene: “Anthony Volpe’s dad was getting into it with a Mets fan in defense of his son.”

Although it is not known for certain what the fan said to provoke the reaction, it is not hard to imagine that the words revolved around Anthony Volpe’s performance, given his current struggles on the field.

Volpe’s performance drop

Anthony Volpe, who at 24 years of age is seen as a key piece for the future of the Yankees, is going through one of his worst slumps. So far this season, his batting average is a modest .219 with 10 home runs. During the recent series, his offensive performance was just two hits in 11 at-bats, despite hitting a solo home run in the third game.

His OPS has dropped to .695 over the past three weeks, his lowest point since late April. But the problem is not limited to the plate. Defensively, Volpe is also having a tough year, committing 11 errors in 83 games, which puts him as the leader in errors in the entire American League.

The Yankees’ losing streak

The New York Yankees are going through a tough time and with it the criticism from fans is increasing. The team is in the midst of a six-game losing streak, its worst of the current campaign. As if that were not enough, these results cost them the lead in the American League East, so the crisis is big and is affecting the team’s main objectives.

The situation has become especially worrying with recent defeats to their crosstown rivals, the New York Mets, including a painful 12-6 loss in the second game of the weekend series. There is a lot of concern about the level of the team and therefore, the mood is not the best.
