It is officially NFL Draft week, the high-stakes window where the league’s next generation of superstars finds a home. While the Las Vegas Raiders are widely expected to kick things off by making National Champion Fernando Mendoza the second first-overall pick in franchise history, the rest of the board remains a complete mystery.
This year is particularly volatile because six teams, the Jets, Browns, Giants, Dolphins, Cowboys, and Chiefs, hold multiple first-round selections, a scenario that almost guarantees a chaotic night of trades.
For the Kansas City Chiefs, this draft is the most critical in a decade. After a disappointing 2025 campaign that saw their dreams of a four-peat vanish, they enter the night with the 9th overall pick, their highest since the 2013 selection of Eric Fisher. That year sparked the Andy Reid era, and while the team recently secured Travis Kelce for a 14th season on a $12 million contract, the front office knows veteran leadership alone won’t fix the holes left by an injury-ravaged roster.
Patrick Mahomes Injury Update: Andy Reid Provides Positive Outlook Ahead of Draft
The biggest cloud hanging over Arrowhead Stadium isn’t the draft board, but the health of Patrick Mahomes. After tearing his ACL and LCL last December, the recovery timeline has been the primary concern for the front office.
While a typical nine-month recovery would suggest a return in Week 2 or 3 of the 2026 NFL season, Mahomes has been aggressive in his rehab. He famously shocked fans back in late March by posting videos of himself throwing passes and performing drills just three months post-surgery.
On Monday, Andy Reid offered the most substantial update we’ve heard since the procedure. Reid confirmed that Mahomes is fully immersed in the “rehab phase,” attending meetings and back in the weight room. While the team remains cautious-knowing they have Justin Fields as a high-level insurance policy, Reid’s tone was undeniably optimistic.
“He’s doing great, but we just have to be smart with this thing,” Reid noted. The fact that Mahomes is already lifting and moving well suggests the Week 1 goal is still very much on the table, which changes the entire complexity of the Chiefs‘ early-season strategy.
Fixing the Secondary: Why Mansoor Delane and Caleb Downs are Vital Targets
While the offense received a massive boost in free agency with the signing of Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III, that move essentially confirmed the Chiefs are passing on top running back prospect Jeremiyah Love.
Instead, the focus has shifted entirely to a secondary that was gutted by the departures of Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson. Brett Veach currently holds the 9th pick and the 29th pick (acquired from the Rams), giving him the ammunition to completely rebuild the back end of the defense in a single night.
Two names have emerged as the “must-have” prospects for Kansas City: Mansoor Delane and Caleb Downs. Delane is viewed as a lockdown corner with the length to replace McDuffie immediately. However, the prospect of landing Caleb Downs is what has Chiefs fans truly excited.
Downs was a revelation at Alabama before becoming a two-time unanimous All-American at Ohio State, where he led the Buckeyes to a 2024 National Championship. His consistency and high football IQ make him a perfect fit for Steve Spagnuolo’s complex defensive schemes. If the Chiefs can pair a healthy Mahomes with a revamped secondary anchored by Downs or Delane, their “rebuilding year” might turn into another championship run faster than anyone expected.
