It could be the beginning of the end for Anthony Volpe with the New York Yankees. For a team like the Yankees, the margin for error is razor-thin, and with a fanbase that’s growing increasingly frustrated, it’s becoming even harder for Volpe to regain the credibility that’s starting to slip away.

When the possibility of replacing Anthony Volpe was hinted at before the trade deadline, it was just a “maybe”-until a player arrived who is now starting to take away his starts.
“Anthony Volpe is out of the lineup today because he’s been ‘scuffling’ of late, particularly offensively, Aaron Boone said,” per Goodman. “Asked if Volpe will return to the lineup tomorrow, Boone said ‘we’ll see.’ Boone pointed out that having Jose Caballero makes this more of an option since he’s been playing so well since the deadline.”
Recently, Volpe reached 17 errors this season, and he did so in a series that fans are unlikely to forget. The Yankees‘ shortstop is only surpassed by Elly De La Cruz in total errors, with just one separating them (18).
Jose Caballero arrived ready to perform and seize his opportunity. Initially used as a utility player, he’s now earning starts. In his last seven games, Caballero has far outperformed Volpe offensively, with a .389/.522/.722 slash line compared to Volpe’s .042/.042/.083.
Aaron Boone has consistently defended Anthony Volpe throughout the season, but his messaging has been unclear. We may be witnessing the final games of the shortstop, which would be deeply disappointing given the high expectations the organization had for him.
