Anthony Volpe’s time with the New York Yankees in 2025 has been full of ups and downs. The shortstop has struggled mightily, especially on defense. Yankees fans have been furious with Volpe for his costly errors
Manager Aaron Boone was forced to leave him out for a couple of games. However, this did not change anything, as Volpe’s problems have continued. During his game against the Chicago Red Sox, Volpe recorded another disaster that did not sit well with the fans.
Volpe retains manager’s support
Boone has always defended his players, and this is not the first time he has expressed his support for Anthony Volpe. In a recent interview with The Athletic, Aaron Boone dismissed the idea of sending Volpe to Triple-A.
First of all, he is a more productive offensive player than he is given credit for. We just criticize his struggles because, in a way, there were people who praised him and expected a lot from him. Although he has not come anywhere close to meeting what we expect and what he expects offensively – and recognizing some weeks this year where he struggled even defensively – he is still a top-line defensive player in a prime position, with some offensive productivity, Boone said.
Is it time to think about a replacement?
While Anthony Volpe has shown signs of improvement at the plate, the Yankees need more from the Gold Glove winner.
The Yankees have three shortstops on the team after signing Jose Caballero and Amed Rosario. If Anthony Volpe’s slump and defensive struggles persist, the franchise will be forced to sign Caballero or Rosario.

With less than 30 games remaining, the Bronx Bombers still have a great chance to win the division title. However, they must be consistent in their success. The pressure on the New York team is high after losing the World Championship last year.
