Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev will contest the final of the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the season.The Italian, who defeated young American Ben Shelton 7-6(2), 6-2, 6-2, will be looking to retain his title in the Antipodean tournament to claim what would be his third Grand Slam at just 23 years of age.

Zverev, the world number two, won his match against Novak Djokovic, after the Serb had to retire injured after losing the first set 7-6(5). Without a ‘major’ to his name, it will be the third final for the German tennis player, the first at the Australian Open. The last final he played in a ‘Grand Slam’ was at Roland Garros last year, in which he lost to Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1 and 6-2.

It will be the seventh time that Sinner and Zverev have faced each other. The balance is in favor of the German, who has beaten his rival four times. However, the Italian has the last victory between the two, in the semifinals of the Cincinnati tournament, which he won in a hard-fought match 7-6(9), 5-7 and 7-6(4).
