The Yankees’ elimination in just four games at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays not only closed out a disappointing 2025 season, but also opened up a new battle: that of the front office against time and finances. Cody Bellinger, a key piece of the New York offense, will become a free agent this winter, and the front office does not plan to negotiate an extension before that date.
The alternative on the horizon is left-hander Kyle Tucker, a four-time All-Star who could command a contract close to $400 million. However, the Yankees have no room to keep both.
Aaron Judge has already chosen: “I want Bellinger back”
Yankees captain Aaron Judge did not hide his stance. In remarks after the elimination, he made it clear that he wants Bellinger back:
“We have a lot of winning players here… you mentioned a couple right there with Grisham and Bellinger... hopefully we can get them back and see what happens.”
I hope we can bring Bellinger back
Judge directly urged general manager Brian Cashman to keep intact the core that competed in 2025. And the fans are with him: a Pinstripe Alley poll revealed that 61% of fans prioritize re-signing Bellinger, compared to 25% who prefer to sign Tucker.
A winter full of doubts for the Yankees
While the debate centers on the outfield, many fans warn of a bigger problem: pitching. Ace Gerrit Cole missed the entire season due to Tommy John surgery and will not be ready for Opening Day. Carlos Rodon (18 wins) is also recovering from an elbow injury, and Clarke Schmidt remains out after his second TJ surgery.
The bullpen was also a disaster down the stretch. Not even the additions of David Bednar, Camilo Doval or Devin Williams managed to stabilize it. A rebuilding of the pitching staff seems inevitable.
The final decision is Cashman’s
If the Yankees fail to re-sign Bellinger, they could look for alternatives such as Trent Grisham, Kyle Schwarber or Cedric Mullins. But the ideal scenario remains clear: keep the chemistry and listen to their captain.
The ball is now in Brian Cashman’s court. Will he follow the wishes of Aaron Judge and the fans, or will he go for the jewel of the market, Kyle Tucker? Winter in the Bronx promises to be hotter than ever.
