Spring training in Major League Baseball is just around the corner, and the different teams are still making adjustments to their rosters to be ready for April, including the New York Yankees.
The Bronx Bombers finally exorcised some of their demons in 2024 and managed to return to a World Series, something that had not happened since 2009, but the New York team is now obliged not only to reach the Fall Classic, but also to win the pennant that has eluded them for 16 years.
With this in mind, the Yankees are beginning to adjust key positions for the season, including pitching, where they signed starter Max Fried in free agency and made trades for closer Devin Williams and outfielder Cody Bellinger.
The players Yankees want
The Yankees want to put behind them the bitter taste of not being able to retain Juan Soto, who opted to leave for the Mets, who will pay him $765 million for a 15-year contract, five million more than the Yankees’ offer.
Now, a report from the New York Post indicates that the Yankees are interested in Roansy Contreras and Allan Winans to bolster their bullpen, and both pitchers would arrive via waivers, which is the process by which players who are released from a team can be claimed by others.
Contreras was a Yankees prospect who was sent to Pittsburgh in 2022 to trade for Jameson Taillon. Contreras in 2024 with Pirates and Angels has a 4.72 ERA in 90 career appearances (33 starts) with 201 strikeouts and 103 walks in 234 2/3 innings.
While Winans was claimed by the Atlanta Braves after his stint with the Mets, he was then sent to the minor league affiliates where he had a 3.23 ERA in his career in 51 games.
