The Dallas Wings aren’t ready to waste a generational talent. Despite high hopes after drafting Paige Bueckers, the team has stumbled to an 8-23 record, leaving fans frustrated and searching for answers.
But according to general manager Curt Miller, the solution might not be more minutes or new teammates-it could be a complete rethink of how Bueckers is used on the court.
Miller believes the rookie star could thrive without being the team’s primary ball handler, drawing inspiration from how the Golden State Warriors use Stephen Curry.
Bueckers will be the Steph Curry of the Wings
Bueckers’ traditional role since her time with the UConn Huskies has been as a point guard, and while it’s unusual to see a point guard off the ball, Miller is willing to take a page from the Warriors’ playbook.
In this draft plan, Bueckers would take on the role Curry plays in Golden State, keeping the opposing defense guessing with his off-ball movement while Draymond Green initiates most of the offense.
“She enjoys being off the ball and then brought back into actions, not worn down by defensive point guards pressuring her full court,” Miller told the Dallas Hoops Journal. That shift, he says, would save her energy and make her even more dangerous with her movement and scoring instincts.

Grace Berger’s role has been cited as a blueprint, with Bueckers expected to alternate between off-ball freedom and on-ball control in bigger lineups. Against taller, less agile defenders, her quickness could become a devastating weapon.
While the Wings’ season has been rocky, Bueckers’ rookie campaign is already flashing the dominance that made her a top draft pick. And if Miller’s gamble works, Dallas could turn a frustrating year into the foundation of a future contender.
