The World Baseball Classic has not disappointed, giving us spectacular plays and unexpected surprises, such as when Venezuela defeated Japan 8-5 in the quarterfinals. The hero of that night was Wilyer Abreu, who hit a three-run homer that completely changed the course of the game.
The hit came in the sixth inning, at a critical moment in the game. Venezuela was trailing on the scoreboard when Abreu found the perfect pitch and sent it to the second level of the stadium, unleashing the euphoria of the fans in attendance.
Wilyer Abreu and the play that changed Venezuela’s destiny
That swing allowed Venezuela to come from behind, and in the process meant the elimination of the reigning tournament champion, who had once again come as one of the favorites for the title.
“It was a very exciting moment”: Abreu remembered his historic at-bat
After the game, Abreu shared what went through his mind at that decisive moment. The outfielder explained that his initial goal was not necessarily to hit a home run, but to help the team tie the game.
It was a very exciting moment. I was just trying to at least tie the game with a sacrifice fly. He threw me a very good pitch to hit, I made good contact and the ball went out.
The Venezuelan also revealed that, seconds before the home run, he had let an opportunity slip away by fouling off a similar pitch: “When I saw that pitch I thought, ‘I can’t miss that pitch twice.’ So I just tried to stay focused on that pitch and hit the ball hard.”
Concentration and patience turned into the most important hit of the night.
Venezuela vs Japan: A star-studded duel from the first inning
The game started with intensity from the first inning. Venezuela quickly took the lead thanks to a home run by Ronald Acuna Jr. in the first at-bat of the game.
However, Japan responded immediately with a home run by Japanese phenomenon Shohei Ohtani, tying the score and further igniting the atmosphere of the match.
As the innings progressed, Japan managed to take the lead, but Venezuela never stopped pressing offensively. The offensive momentum continued until Abreu‘s decisive hit changed the course of the game.
Thanks to this victory, Venezuela advanced to the semifinals of the tournament, a very significant achievement in their participation in the World Baseball Classic.
