What is this extra weight for?

In addition, although the weight is reflected in kilos, this is not just fat. It is usually the result mainly of the combination of muscle mass and fat that develops each in its right measure to perform optimally.

A greater weight provides greater impact force, leverage and ability to stop or push opposing players. This is a key point in determining the success of the play and the player in his position.

Use in the field

Normally, this extra weight is used in the field in various ways. One of them is to push and block. Having a large size helps to create lanes for those who are in charge of running or to protect teammates, thus facilitating the progress of the play and stopping that of the opponents.

It can also help in fulfilling defensive duties. The bigger and more powerful the wall to be breached, the more difficult it will be for the opponent. It is important to be clear that these players are still elite athletes. In many cases, it can be seen how they are athletically very efficient players for their weight. They are fast, agile and efficient in their work; even more so than lighter players. And, of course, it is not the only sport in which heavier athletes are agile, strong and physically exceptional. In athletics, throwers tend to be larger and heavier, but they excel in their performance in the throwing circle. It’s not about the body you have or the weight (that’s just a number), it’s about how you use what you have to perform on the field of play and make the most of your strengths in your sport.
