Mexican and American clubs are ready for a new edition of the Leagues Cup 2025, which this time presents a new format that will allow the load of matches between the participating teams to be more equitable, which in turn will allow the Liga MX not to stop for a month
The new format of the Leagues Cup 2025 will feature 18 teams from Liga MX and 18 clubs from MLS, which fuels the soccer rivalry between Mexico and the United States. In its first phase, the Leagues Cup 2025 will have a group stage that will be played over one week. It should be noted that Mexican teams have not performed well in past editions of the Leagues Cup, which has led to criticism of teams that are obliged to be protagonists, such as Club America, Cruz Azul, Monterrey and Tigres. There has also been some questioning as to whether Mexican clubs take this competition seriously
New Leagues Cup format for 2025
The 2025 Leagues Cup qualifying phase will be played from July 29 to August 7. Each team will face three rivals from the opposing league and at the end a total of eight teams will qualify, four from Liga MX and four from MLS, which guarantees that in the quarterfinals there will be direct confrontations with rivals from each tournament
On this occasion, the local competitions will not stop as the qualifiers will be played in a staggered manner. On August 19 and 20, the quarter-finals will be played. Then, the semi-finals will be held on August 26 and 27. Finally, the final and the third-place match will be played on August 31
