Carlos Alcaraz is through to the second round of the US Open after seeing off Reilly Opelka in his debut at the American Grand Slam. In the second round, his opponent will be Mattia Bellucci, a player he has never played against. ‘Carlitos’ has already equalled his performance at the 2024 US Open, so from now on he can only keep adding in the race to take the world number one ranking from Jannik Sinner. The Italian also defends the title, so he has a lot to lose
Mattia Bellucci, at 24 years of age, is ranked 65th in the ATP rankings. In the first round of the US Open, the Italian defeated China’s Shang Juncheng. He was leading (7-6, 1-6, 6-3, 3-0), but finally secured his qualification thanks to his opponent’s withdrawal. His last match before this US Open was a 3-6, 1-6 defeat against Spain’s Jaume Munar in the ATP 250 in Winston-Salem (USA), just over a week ago
