At 60 years old, Todd Monken will have his first experience as an NFL head coach after a successful career as an offensive coordinator, most notably with the Baltimore Ravens. Now, he takes over in Cleveland with the challenge of transforming one of the league’s worst offenses-a process that will take time.
Cleveland previously had a strong head coach in Kevin Stefanski, who led the team to the playoffs twice and kept them competitive. However, the offense collapsed, largely due to instability at quarterback, which ultimately led to his dismissal. Stefanski quickly landed as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, while the Browns turned to Monken for his offensive-minded approach.
Last season, the Browns finished with one of the three worst offenses in the NFL-unsurprising considering they started three different quarterbacks: Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel, and finally Shedeur Sanders, who started seven games and was the most consistent of the group. Still, that level of instability makes it extremely difficult to compete in the NFL.
The Browns can’t afford to make a mistake in the Draft
The Browns cannot afford to miss in the draft. While their defense remains highly competitive-led by Myles Garrett, who broke the single-season sack record in 2025-their priority with two first-round picks should be offense, particularly a wide receiver and an offensive lineman.
At pick No. 6, Carnell Tate could be available. Coming from Ohio State Buckeyes-a program known for producing elite receivers-he is seen as a strong fit. The New York Giants, who pick No. 5, appear set at receiver after signing Darnell Mooney, which increases the chances of Tate falling to Cleveland.
Analyst Nick Wilson on 92.3 The Fan Cleveland emphasized that the Browns must take that risk, given their lack of talent in the passing game-especially after a disappointing 2025 season from Jerry Jeudy:
“I understand that there would be a lot of pressure if you take a WR at (No.) 6… you have to get this guy right. The Browns just did not have nearly enough at that position last year.”
With the No. 6 pick, Cleveland has a chance to land an immediate-impact playmaker who could significantly help whichever quarterback Monken decides to start-whether it’s Shedeur Sanders or Deshaun Watson. Then, with pick No. 24, the Browns are strong candidates to select an offensive lineman and continue rebuilding their offense.
