A same-game parlay (SGP) is a wager in which you bet on multiple outcomes occurring from one specific game or match. Unlike a traditional parlay, SGPs focus solely on events within this one specific game.

How Do Same Game Parlays Work in Sports Betting?

A traditional parlay is a bet where legs from multiple games are included. 

For instance, you can bet the moneyline for Cowboys-Eagles, the spread for Chiefs-Raiders, and the Over/Under point total for Buccaneers-Falcons. 

But a same-game parlay (SGP)? That’s a parlay where all legs of the bet come from the same game. Imagine for Cowboys-Eagles, betting the moneyline, Over/Under point total and Over/Under Dak Prescott passing yards in that single game. 

So, now that we understand traditional parlays include multiple legs from multiple events on one ticket, and same-game parlays include multiple legs from a single event, let’s analyze the specifics of this type of wager. 

Correlated Same Game Parlays

Correlated same game parlays (SGPs) combine bets where outcomes are linked, like betting a quarterback recording over 300 yards passing and his wide receiver going over 90 receiving yards. Both outcomes are linked, or correlated. Sportsbooks at times might limit payouts or block these bets since correlated legs reduce their edge.

For example, pairing Jared Goff over 250 passing yards with “Amon-Ra St. Brown over 50 receiving yards in a Lions game is correlated and increases the chance of the bettor winning, so a sportsbook might not offer every combination possible for these wagers— or will give a significantly reduced payout in comparison to a SGP that involves players on different teams or different sides of the ball. 

Uncorrelated Same Game Parlays

Uncorrelated SGPs combine bets within a single game where the outcomes don’t directly affect each other. For example, if you bet on the Lakers-Clippers game to go over 220.5 points, and also parlay it with LeBron James to score the first basket, then this would be an uncorrelated SGP as the two wagers are not dependent on each other. Because of this, you’ll likely see better odds that are more similar to a standard parlay. Another example of this could be taking Patrick Mahomes to record over 1.5 pass TDs and parlaying it with Justin Herbert to throw over 0.5 INTs in a game between the Chiefs and Chargers.

While you might make less money by placing a SGP, this type of wager is a newer feature enabled by advanced sportsbook technology— and allows you more options and a better chance to profit overall. Traditional parlays are thought to have a better chance of hitting because the legs are uncorrelated. For example, if you create a traditional parlay where you wager the Knicks to beat the Pistons, and the Suns to beat the Jazz, those are two independent results. However, in an SGP, if you bet the Knicks to beat the Pistons and bet Jalen Brunson to score Over 25 points, those two results could have a direct impact on each other.

Standard odds formulas are used in the traditional parlay wager. In an SGP, the odds are adjusted based on the correlation of the results, meaning the payout could be higher or lower based on that adjustment.

Put simply, SGPs are less likely to hit because several outcomes must occur within one sporting event. Betting the 49ers beat the Seahawks is more straightforward than betting the 49ers beat the Seahawks and Brock Purdy to throw for 300+ yards in that game. Therefore, SGP payouts look a lot more attractive than singular bets, but parlays are less likely to hit.
