Boxing fans were left stunned as Tyson Fury announced his sudden retirement in a cryptic social media video on Monday.

Shot from his car, the Gypsy King’s message not only declared his exit from the sport but also featured a puzzling reference to the infamous 18th-century highwayman, Dick Turpin.

“Hi everybody, I’m going to make this short and sweet,” Fury said.

“I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing. It’s been a blast, I’ve loved every single minute of it. I’m going to end with this… Dick Turpin wore a mask. God bless everybody, see you on the other side. GET UP!”

The phrase “Dick Turpin wore a mask” is often used to express feelings of being cheated or shortchanged. Fury’s cryptic statement has since sparked widespread speculation about its true meaning, with some suggesting it’s a pointed jab at Anthony Joshua’s camp amid ongoing negotiations for their much-anticipated “Battle of Britain.”

The reference to Turpin, known for his daring robberies of stagecoaches in the 1700s, has been interpreted in various ways. One theory is that Fury feels disrespected or “robbed” in the wake of his recent unanimous decision loss to Oleksandr Usyk on December 21-a result Fury fiercely contested.

Another interpretation ties the comment to stalled discussions with Joshua’s camp. The financial terms or conditions for the proposed fight may have left Fury feeling shortchanged, with many speculating he’s using the retirement as a negotiating tactic for a larger share of the purse.

Promoter Eddie Hearn has cast doubt on the retirement’s authenticity, suggesting it could be a ploy.

“I think retirement is the best option if your heart isn’t in it anymore,” Hearn said.

“But I doubt it. Retirement announcements often lead to bigger paydays for a comeback.”

Is the Battle of Britain still on the cards?

Despite Fury’s announcement, the dream matchup with Joshua isn’t entirely off the table. Hearn confirmed that Wembley Stadium had been reserved for a potential May or June fight. However, Fury’s mental state and willingness to step back into the ring remain the deciding factors.

Joshua has continued to express optimism, calling a fight with Fury inevitable. “It has to happen,” he said recently, with Saudi officials also backing the clash.

For now, Fury’s cryptic farewell leaves fans and pundits uncertain. Whether this marks the end of an illustrious career or a setup for a triumphant return, the boxing world awaits the Gypsy King’s next move.
