Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez will soon have to start negotiations for his next fight in the early months of 2025, but for now he has taken some ‘pressure’ off his shoulders.

On September 14, Alvarez defeated Edgar Berlanga, whom he came close to knocking out. After that fight, the Mexican said he is looking to rest before preparing for the new defense of his title.

Mauricio Sulaiman, president of the World Boxing Council (WBC), accepted that they will not make the mistake of imposing a mandatory opponent on the Mexican, in reference to what the IBF did and that, for not accepting to fight with William Scull, stripped him of his belt.

“We have been working hard for some time to set an example, accepting unifications and ensuring that there are undisputed champions.”

WBC ‘wants’ Canelo Alvarez to become undisputed champion

With Canelo, unfortunately, some organizations have taken the path of demanding mandatories that are not at the level of those champions. We are not going to do that when we have a champion of a level like the one we are discussing

“It was done with Crawford, it was done with (Jermell) Charlo, it was done in the heavyweight division, now with Beterbiev and Bivol,” said the WBC executive.

So, as he has been doing, Saul Alvarez can negotiate with whomever he wants for his next fight, and as has been reported recently, Terence Crawford could have his chance for the “biggest fight in the sport”, but his first challenge will be to convince the Guadalajara native.

WBC seeks interim champions to access big events

At the WBC convention being held in Germany, Mauricio Sulaiman was re-elected as president of the organization, and with this the leader seeks to promote the young values of boxing.

An example of this is to promote interim champions in the different weights so that they can earn the opportunity to star in the big fights with the champions of their division.

We will order interim titles. We ordered one at heavyweight to allow the winner the opportunity to seek the big fights. We just ordered this in the super middleweight so that Canelo can also look for the big fights,” explained Sulaiman.
