What happened to Rory McIlroy during the third round of the British Open was something we had never seen before. Perhaps some fans have experienced a similar experience during a private round or while practicing, but certainly during a professional tournament broadcast on television we had never witnessed something as rare as what happened to the Northern Irishman.

Rory hit two balls at the same time while playing the 11th hole at Royal Portrush. The world number two, who is struggling to get close to the lead during the third round, hit a shot from the tee that went astray. McIlroy was in the rough on the right, but confusion reigned during his approach shot.

Live it was very fast, but a second object was seen to jump after the impact of Rory’s club on the ground. Indeed, the golfer took another ball that was buried in the thick grass and probably sunk into the ground.

It rose and fell at his feet. McIlroy’s real ball landed on the fairway, not far from the green, but the player realised what had happened and crouched down in amazement to pick up the second ball. Unfortunately, the hole ended in a bogey for the home player. Don’t worry, because on the 12th he holed a 15-metre putt for eagle.
