It’s no surprise that after spending the last two seasons as the No. 3 option for a Cowboys group that had Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush firmly entrenched ahead of him, Trey Lance will now move on. Stephen Jones, the team’s vice president and son of owner Jerry Jones, said this week that “Lance will not return.”

But don’t expect Lance to disappear completely. It seems that despite playing in only 12 games and starting five of his four years in the NFL, Lance still has fans around the league willing to take a chance on him.

That’s according to NFL expert Tom Pelissero, who spoke about Lance‘s situation on NFL Network on Monday. Pelissero made two surprising claims: first, that the Cowboys offered Lance an extension, and second, that other teams are likely to consider Lance in free agency.

Lance will be an unrestricted free agent from March 12

“As for Trey Lance, for anyone who thinks this is a referendum on him, on the one hand, he’s a free agent,” Pelissero said. “This is not like they are releasing him. But in fact, I have been told that they came to him with a contract extension offer late last season. It didn’t make sense for Trey Lance to accept it because he wasn’t playing for the Cowboys at the time. It didn’t end up working out.”

“There were several teams after Dallas signed him, trying to sign Trey Lance, who is still only 24 years old, he is younger than Michael Penix,” said NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. “There will be interest in Trey Lance as a development player in this cycle. “No doubt, when you have a guy like Cooper Rush there, who they rely on, a veteran, he will also do well in this market, and Dallas will probably look one way or another for a backup quarterback.”

Lance, the 49ers’ third overall pick in the 2021 draft out of North Dakota State, ended up appearing in four games with the Cowboys and only started one. He completed 25 of 41 passes for 266 yards on the year, with no touchdowns and one interception. He started in Week 18 against Washington, a 23-19 loss.
