Victor Wembanyama possesses unique qualities when he is playing on NBA courts, but he also knows how to recognize the quality of his peers, the same players he competes against on a nightly basis. His blend of size, skill, and versatility has made him one of the most talked-about figures in the league, even at such an early stage of his career.
Because of that confidence, he does not hesitate or hold back when asked, from his perspective, who the best player in the league is right now, even if his answer leaves more than a few people stunned. Wembanyama has never shied away from expressing strong opinions, and this time was no exception.
For Wembanyama, three-time league MVP Nikola Jokic is not currently among his favorites to occupy the top spot as the best player of the season. The French basketball star relies on different criteria when delivering his verdict on such a complex and often polarizing debate, weighing factors beyond pure offensive brilliance.
I think Jokic is the best offensive player. I don’t think he’s the best player.
The player told ESPN, while also expressing hope that he can return to the court soon as he continues to recover from his injury.
Who deserves to be on Wembanyama’s list of the NBA’s best
At the moment, the Frenchman remains sidelined due to a calf injury, and from his point of view, other players deserve the honor of being considered the best in the league at this stage. His evaluation focuses on the impact on both ends of the floor.
From Victor’s perspective, those worthy of that distinction right now are Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Bucks and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the league-leading Thunder. In his eyes, they represent a more complete package in today’s NBA.
For him, they are more complete players who can help their teams both offensively and defensively, while also serving as the undisputed reference points of their respective franchises, setting the tone every night.
It’s hard to say, I think it’s between Giannis and Shai.”… “When I come back on the court, I think it will be me.
Wembanyama said.
For the French basketball player, this has not been his best year in terms of health, as it has been plagued by injuries. Even so, he is currently posting the best numbers of his NBA career, averaging 26.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, 4.0 assists, plus 3.6 blocked shots per game.
The next games for the San Antonio Spurs
Wembanyama is expected to return soon and once again be a fundamental piece for his team, as he has been whenever healthy. The upcoming games for the Spurs are:
- Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday, December 13;
- Washington Wizards on December 18;
- Atlanta Hawks on Friday, December 19;
- Washington Wizards on Sunday, December 21; and
- Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday, December 23
It is a demanding stretch for Victor’s team, which hopes to secure as many wins as possible to remain competitive. At this moment, the Spurs sit in fifth place in the Western Conference with a 17-7 record.
