Travis Kelce and his now-fiancée, global pop superstar Taylor Swift, broke the internet last week when the Kansas City Chiefs tight end got down on one knee and asked her to marry him.

Surrounded by an elaborate display of flowers, Kelce made his heartfelt proposal, and Swift joyfully accepted. The moment sent shockwaves through social media, with Swift’s post announcing their engagement receiving more than 20 million interactions. Swifties across the globe flooded the comments section, celebrating the couple’s milestone.

How Travis originally imagined the proposal

After the initial frenzy died down, Kelce shared details about the special moment on his podcast New Heights, which he co-hosts with his brother, Jason Kelce. He revealed that the proposal everyone witnessed was not at all how he had envisioned it.

I once thought I would do it on water.

Travis admitted, hinting that his original idea was far more elaborate.

He went on to explain the most important lesson he learned while planning the proposal:

Man, you’ve gotta know your gal. You’ve gotta know your gal or your significant other. You’ve gotta know them.

You can’t let how somebody else does it make you feel like you need to do it that way.

I would just say know your partner, know who you’re doing it for and do it for the right reasons and everything else will be beautiful.

The couple officially announced their engagement on August 26, though Travis’s father had previously hinted that the proposal actually took place earlier that month. In the caption of her post, Swift, known for hits like Cruel Summer, Red, and Shake It Off, shared a playful message:

Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.

Sharing the news and looking ahead

During the podcast, Travis expressed his gratitude for the outpouring of love and support they received.

I appreciate everybody that reached out and sent something and all the posts and all the excitement that’s been going on. It’s been really fun telling everybody who I’m going to be spending the rest of my life with.

Speaking about calling Taylor his fiancée, he added.

I still get giddy, exciting times.

The next step for the couple is planning their wedding. Travis explained that both he and Taylor will be hands-on in organizing every detail to ensure their special day is perfect.

I cannot wait to hear more of the planning and everything that will take place.

He said enthusiastically.

Jason jokingly warned his younger brother.

Travis, you’re about to embark on the wedding planning phase of a relationship.

Oh, it’s gonna go crazy,” Travis replied. “That is the next step, yeah, I’ve heard about that.

While navigating wedding plans, Kelce is also preparing for the start of the NFL season. The game is set for Friday, September 5.
