As Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce near the two-year anniversary of their first date, details of the NFL star’s quiet yet determined efforts to connect with the global music icon; including how he needed one of the pop star’s inner circle to help him meet her.

Behind the polished spotlight of their romance was a calculated plan from the Kansas City Chiefs‘ tight end, that involved him heading to her Eras Tour show in Missouri in July 2023 with the help of her friends.

He wasn’t just another celebrity in the audience on that day he had a mission. Unable to meet her in person at the show, he revealed that he had discreet assistance from people close to Swift who helped spark the connection.

“There were definitely people she knew that knew who I was, in her corner [who said]: ‘Yo! Did you know he was coming?’,” Kelce told WSJ Magazine. “I had somebody playing Cupid.”

The unexpected matchmaker within the Grammy-winning artist’s camp proved to be a great success too as that behind-the-scenes effort paid off, with Swift ended up reaching out to Kelce herself.

“She told me exactly what was going on and how I got lucky enough to get her to reach out,” Kelce added, and the rest is history. The pair are now hurtling towards their second-year anniversary and there are even talks an engagement ring may be on the horizon.

How did Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce meet? A timeline

Kelce’s romance with Swift began long before they were spotted together publicly and came fresh off her split with Joe Alwyn, with the 35-year-old singer dating The 1975’s Matt Healy in the interim.

On July 7, she confirmed her single status on Instagram-just one day before the NFL star attended her Eras Tour concert in Kansas City with hopes of meeting her, hinting the stars may have aligned for the pair.

Kelce had prepared a friendship bracelet with his number but didn’t get the chance to give it to Swift, and on the July 26 episode of his podcast New Heights, he shared his disappointment.

This actually went viral and caught the attention of Taylor, who then began to learn about who the Chiefs’ three-time Super Bowl-winning tight end is, whilst Travis recruited the insider for some help.

This eventually led to their first date, which took place secretly in New York City and for a man so used to the spotlight of millions watching him, Kelce described the pressure he felt.

“Everybody around me telling me: ‘Don’t f–k this up,” Travis added. Now, two years later, their relationship has grown serious-all thanks to Kelce’s persistence.

“You miss 100 percent of [the shots] you don’t take, baby, so yeah,” Kelce said, an apt summary of his quests to win the hand of one of the world’s most famous women.
