We’re just over a week away from the start of the NFL season, and the Browns’ soap opera still hasn’t ended-and it doesn’t look like it will anytime soon. Despite the confirmation that Joe Flacco will be the starting quarterback, Dillon Gabriel has won the backup spot, and Shedeur Sanders, who managed to make the roster, will be the third option.
In the end, there were no surprises, and Kevin Stefanski managed the media pressure surrounding Shedeur Sanders. From the start of training camp, Joe Flacco was the clear favorite to be the Browns’ starter, mainly because of his experience and familiarity with the Browns’ system, having spent part of 2023 with the team.
The other quarterback in the mix was Kenny Pickett, but he was traded at the last moment to the Las Vegas Raiders. As for the rookies, Stefanski held his ground: in his mind, Dillon Gabriel was always ahead of Shedeur Sanders, and that will be the case at least at the start of the season.
Travis Kelce wants Shedeur Sanders as the starter
There’s no doubt that the media pressure to put Shedeur Sanders on the field is strong, especially from Browns fans. They want to see Deion Sanders’ son leading Cleveland’s offense, and Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce gave his opinion on the matter.
“Give people what they want,” Travis said. “Start Shedeur… The world wants to see him go out there and not only play but have success. At this point, guys are rooting for him. This isn’t anything against Dillon. This isn’t anything against Joe. I’m just saying the excitement is there for him to go out there. He’s going to put eyes on the screen,” Kelce said on the New Heights podcast with his brother Jason Kelce.
In the end, all eyes will be on Joe Flacco in the Week 1 game against the Cincinnati Bengals. At the first sign of doubt, fans will start pushing to see Shedeur Sanders on the field-although most likely, Dillon Gabriel will be the first option, which will only increase the pressure on Kevin Stefanski.
