Chris Jones may be a three-time Super Bowl champion, but he still recalls one of the most embarrassing moments from his NFL Combine. Kansas City Chiefs teammates Travis Kelce and Jason Kelce recently helped him relive it.

The 2016 Combine in Indianapolis was meant to highlight Jones‘ athleticism, but the defensive tackle’s workout instead made headlines for an unforgettable mishap during his 40-yard dash.

Jones, a former Mississippi State standout, suffered a wardrobe malfunction when his manhood slipped out of his compression shorts, creating an instant viral moment that NFL Network unintentionally zoomed in on.

Years later, the story resurfaced on the New Heights podcast with Travis Kelce and Jason Kelce, leaving the trio in fits of laughter as they recalled the incident, proving that even stars have mortifying moments.

Travis Kelce: “You had one of the most electric combine moments that’s ever gone on national television.”

Chris Jones: “I was so big on being different from everyone – everybody was wearing the fking long tights and I was like, ‘You know what, I’m not going out there and copying everybody. I’m going to wear the short tights.’ I didn’t realise they was boxers, bro! Honest to God!”

Travis Kelce: “Well it made you faster.”

Jason Kelce: “You tripped over that third leg.”

Travis Kelce: “That s is so fking funny. We were dying laughing.”

Jones added that he felt the mishap touch his leg and thought, “Oh s***,” while trying to hide it as children watched. Then Jason Kelce made matters worse by sending the pair back into hysterics as he quipped, “I don’t think mine could ‘fall’ anywhere.”

Despite the mishap, Jones ran the 40-yard dash in 5.03 seconds, ranking fifth fastest among 300-pound defensive linemen. His Combine moment didn’t hurt his draft status, as the Chiefs selected him 37th overall in the second round.

Jones went on to become a seven-time Pro Bowler, three-time All-Pro, and one of the league’s top defensive tackles, proving that a single embarrassing moment did not define him.

Time running out for Kansas City to restructure Chris Jones?

The Chiefs enter the 2026 offseason with one of the worst salary cap situations in the NFL, even after Patrick Mahomes‘ recent restructure freed $43.65 million. Jones‘ $44.85 million cap hit makes him the prime candidate to help.

Jones‘ $19 million base salary could be converted to a signing bonus and prorated over three remaining seasons. Converting $18 million keeps $6 million on the books this season and pushes $12 million into 2027-2028.

The Chiefs currently sit $11.35 million over the cap. Pushing Jones‘ bonus would help them return under while freeing room to retain Travis Kelce or potentially bring back Tyreek Hill. Cutting Jawaan Taylor could create additional space.

The downside is if Jones‘ performance declines with age, his guaranteed money, including prorated bonuses, would reach $16 million annually in dead money over the last two contract years, making a future release costly.

Still, Jones likely has three productive seasons left. The Chiefs must avoid overusing him, as he logs heavy snaps for a 31-year-old defensive tackle, and adding support upfront will require cap dollars to maintain performance.

Jones has also been vocal about wanting Kelce and Hill back. Restructuring his deal could be key to helping Kansas City stay competitive, balancing cap space while keeping an elite defensive line and supporting Mahomes‘ championship window.
