The Philadelphia Eagles entered the offseason intent on recalibrating after a campaign that did not meet expectations. Now, as head coachNick Sirianni reshapes his staff, another key assistant is heading elsewhere.

Ronell Williams, who spent the past two seasons working within Philadelphia’s defensive structure, has accepted a promotion with the Las Vegas Raiders. ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed the move on X.

“Raiders named Ronell Williams their Linebackers Coach and Al Holcomb their Senior Defensive Assistant,” Schefter wrote.

Williams’ departure marks the latest change for a staff that has already undergone notable turnover following the Eagles’ first round playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Philadelphia finished 11-6 in 2025, captured a second consecutive NFC East title and secured the No. 3 seed in the conference. However, their attempt to defend their championship ended abruptly.

Defensive continuity takes a hit

Williams’ path through the NFL coaching ranks began with the Chicago Bears in 2019, where he served as a defensive quality control coach. After five seasons in Chicago, he joined Philadelphia in 2023, initially working with nickel cornerbacks.

In 2024, he transitioned into a dual role as assistant linebackers coach and defensive quality control coach. During that stretch, Williams contributed to the development of linebacker Zack Baun, who earned two Pro Bowl selections and an All-Pro nod. He was also part of the staff that helped guide the Eagles to a Super Bowl LIX victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Philadelphia’s coaching changes have not been limited to defense. The team parted ways with offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo after one season, replacing him with former Green Bay Packers quarterbacks coach Sean Mannion. Passing game coordinator Christian Parker also left to join the Dallas Cowboys as defensive coordinator.

Williams’ exit further complicates Sirianni’s efforts to maintain continuity on a defense that will likely see roster adjustments as well.

With NFL free agency opening March 11, the Eagles now face parallel challenges: rebuilding portions of their coaching staff while reinforcing a roster aiming to return to Super Bowl contention in 2026.
