Just about everything broke right for Shedeur Sanders during his rookie season with the Cleveland Browns. The two veteran quarterbacks in his way were shipped off to other teams, Deshaun Watson couldn’t return from his Achilles injury, and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel suffered a concussion that led to Sanders winning the starting job.
Despite that, fans felt Sanders wasn’t dealt a great hand. The Browns’ pass-catching corps and offensive line weren’t ideal at all, and head coach Kevin Stefanski didn’t seem to see eye-to-eye with the QB. With Stefanski gone, hope was once again renewed when Cleveland brought in offensive guru Todd Monken as the new head coach.
Monken has spoken highly of Sanders, but he has also kept the door open for Watson, who reportedly has the early lead in the QB competition. This week, Monken spoke about the quarterback situation, but chose to keep every possibility open. In doing so, he also refused to count out Gabriel in the competition.
Todd Monken says all 3 Browns quarterbacks have things to like in open competition
The new head coach believes all three QBs have good things about them, and he will give each one the opportunity to prove their worth with their on-field performance.
Monken is giving everyone a clean slate. That was expected for a new head coach coming in, but it’s not great news for Sanders, whose work last season is practically being reset.
Sanders and Watson likely have the edge over Gabriel as we head into the summer, but there’s still a real possibility the Browns bring in another quarterback through the 2026 NFL Draft. That would complicate matters even further for all of the QBs.
