The Dallas Cowboys have started their search for a new backup quarterback for Dak Prescott after Cooper Rush signed with the Baltimore Ravens for $12.2 million, with $4.2 million guaranteed to play the same role, but now behind Lamar Jackson, a two-time NFL MVP.
Rush joined the Cowboys in 2017, always as a backup, but when he took over as the starter due to Dak Prescott’s injuries, he had acceptable performances, especially showing great patience. In 2022, he stood out with a 4-1 record as a starter.
In 2024, after another injury to Prescott, Rush took the reins again, posting a 4-4 record, and now he has decided to leave for the Ravens in the AFC North. Therefore, the Cowboys are looking for a new backup for Dak.
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE COWBOYS ARE TIED TO THE 2025 DRAFT
After Rush’s departure, suggestions on social media have started to circulate, and former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel has already given his options for Dak Prescott’s new backup, which are related to the draft taking place on April 24th.
The suggested options are Jalen Milroe from Alabama and Kyle McCord from Syracuse. Both young quarterbacks will be available, and with a late pick, they could join Jerry Jones’ team.

Milroe totaled 78 touchdowns, 45 through the air and 33 on the ground, placing him fourth in Alabama’s program history. However, in his last game, he had one touchdown and three turnovers against the Michigan Wolverines, which has raised concerns among NFL teams.
McCord, on the other hand, transferred from Ohio State to Syracuse in 2023 and had a standout year in 2024, leading the ACC conference in passing yards, accumulating 4,779 yards and 34 touchdowns, so he could have a promising future in the NFL.
These two have been among the suggestions to become Dak Prescott’s backup in the NFL draft. However, the final decision will be up to the team owner, Jerry Jones.
