For many in the field, Tarik Skubal is the best pitcher in Major League Baseball today. It’s no wonder that several high-profile teams are looking to acquire the player’s services, as the 2026 MLB season is fast approaching and everyone wants to improve their bullpen. However, the Detroit Tigers will do everything they can to keep hold of their ace from the mound.

Just under two weeks ago, the Detroit Tigers said goodbye to Major League Baseball in the American League Division Series after losing 3-2 to the Seattle Mariners in Game 5. In the 15th inning, the emotional and physical toll took its toll on the Tigers, who put their trust in Tommy Kahnle, but he let the bases get loaded and that, coupled with a hit by Jorge Polanco, put the Mariners in the next round of the playoffs.

Dodgers, Phillies and Padres want Tarik Skubal

A player who is receiving all sorts of trade rumors and speculation is Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal. There are now three more teams hoping to land Skubal, according to a report from MLB.com. They are the Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies and San Diego Padres. All three made the MLB postseason in 2025, with the Dodgers playing in the World Series for the second year in a row.

(…) should never be ruled out in situations like this

There is a common denominator as to why teams would want Skubal’s services. “Three other contending teams, the Dodgers, Phillies and Padres, should never be discounted from situations like this, as their front offices have a track record of making big moves,” wrote Mark Feinsand. Several other teams are expected to call this offseason. Skubal is entering his final year before free agency.

Mets get involved and would offer a couple of players to Tigers for Skubal

Tigers owner Christopher Ilitch has not given clear answers about a possible extension for Skubal, which adds more intrigue to the situation. With time running out, Detroit could opt to trade its star to maximize his value before he hits free agency. This is where the New York Mets come into play, with a farm system that has been rated as the best in the league by ESPN.

The Mets have a number of prospects who could interest the Tigers, including pitchers Jonah Tong and Brandon Sproat, as well as infielder/outfielder Jett Williams. The possibility of a trade is real, and while the cost of acquiring Skubal would be less than if he had several years of control, it would still be significant. The Mets are in a strong position to make a competitive offer.
