Deion Sanders weaponized his meeting with Jerry Jones over the vacant Dallas Cowboys post to strongarm the Colorado Buffaloes into handing him a new contract an insider claims, as the 57-year-old commits his future to the NCAA team.
The Cowboys found themselves as the most attractive vacancy of the 2024/25 NFL off-season after they agreed to part ways with Mike McCarthy following a third-place finish in the NFC East.
Armed with assets such as CeeDee Lamb, Micah Parsons and Dak Prescott and a huge budget, they’d make any coach think twice about their current posts and consider the AT&T Stadium.
However, knowing this, Mike Fisher believes Sanders carefully set up the chance to interview as a way to convince the Buffaloes’ board he could leave to boost his own position in the college football side.
“Jerry did Deion a favor by letting him pretend it was an interview,” Fisher told athlonsports.com. “Then Deion told an ‘insider’ pal at ESPN to write it as a ‘news story.’
“It was all a ruse, from the start.”
Sanders celebrates new deal
Eventually, Sanders penned a $54 million contract that will keep him as the head coach at Folsom Field until 2029 at the earliest, as he is charged with hunting down a first NCAA National Championship for the football side since 1990/91.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys opted to move onto Brian Schottenheimer as the man to step into McCarthy’s shoes, as he earns a promotion from his 2024/25 role as the offensive coordinator.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to continue building something special here at Colorado,” Sanders said in a statement. “We’ve just scratched the surface of what this program can be.
“It’s not just about football; it’s about developing young men who are ready to take on the world.
“I’m committed to bringing greatness to this university, on and off the field. We’ve got work to do, and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but here, making history with these incredible players and this passionate fan base.”
